Learning that travels
Design development for the moment someone returns to their desk.
Begin at the application
Ask what the participant needs to do differently after the learning. Use that answer to choose the content and the practice. A workshop can be engaging and still fail to prepare someone for the actual situation they face.
Practise under realistic conditions
Give people time to try the skill with the kinds of constraints they recognise. Discuss what makes the task difficult and let them test an alternative. Feedback should help them understand a choice, not simply judge a performance.
Plan the follow-through
Agree one action to attempt and a conversation to review it. Managers can support application by making space for practice and asking what was learned. Development travels into work when it has a clear destination.
